Keystone Grant Progress

Our museum is being transformed. It is so exciting to see the renovations being completed. the walls and ceilings on both floors have been painted; the yellow pine second floor has been refinished and is beautiful. The first floor has been redone to look just like the original, but of course, it looks brand new and just gorgeous. Upstairs the florescent lights have been replaced with hanging lights replicating the originals, and all other old and dangerous wiring has been replaced. Our handicap-accessible ramp to the first floor is in place, and the new outside steps are done.  There is lots of volunteer work to do now, such as putting the artifacts back in the cases, making new labels, all sorts of cleaning and loads of paperwork and filing.  If you can give an hour here and there, any help will certainly be appreciated-just call any board member.

The Portage Volunteer Firemen and the Portage Area High School football team moved our second floor cases and artifacts back into the building. that was a lot of heavy lifting, but the boys made short work of the job and it is very much appreciated. Volunteers with strong muscles are in short supply.

Two helpful volunteers, Vic Schaffrenek and Bob Yetsko have built an extra shelf on the two units in the office and have painted the staff bathroom.  thanks, men!

There is more to be done under the grant, but they are smaller jobs. We will keep you posted via newsletter and/or Portage Dispatch.

The next big (and expensive) project is the work required by the Department of labor and Industry to make our building safe under the fire code. This was mentioned in our last newsletter. We hired an architect and he has submitted his plans to the D.L.1., which has approved them. Cost estimates will be next, then decisions must be made. We welcome input from any interested parties.

Tentative 2001 Schedule

The Planning Committee of the PAHS met on January 29th. The committee decided on a tentative schedule for the coming year.

The Great Portage Yard Sale is scheduled for May 19. The site for handing out the maps is 804 Main Street, across from Portage National Bank. Watch the community Bulletin board on Portage Cable or the Dispatch for more details.

A new fund raiser was decided on for this year. Sometime this summer we are going to try and schedule Portage's answer to the Antiques Road Show. Antique dealers will be available to evaluate antiques. A small fee will be charged for the evaluation. The dealers will also have some of their antiques available for sale. Now is the time to start looking in the attic for any valuable antiques that you may have and bring them to be evaluated.

The committee decided to do another historical structure in the continuing series. this year's building is the Rivoli Theater.

The Historical Society is considering a trip to either Bedford Village or the Compass Inn at Laughlintown. the trip to the Compass Inn would be to attend the Fall Festival or the Christmas tour. If you would be interested in any of these trips, please let any member of the Board of Directors know. The scheduling of the trip will depend on whether we have enough people interested to fill a bus.

John and Janet Adams will co-chair the Summerfest Ball.

The Christmas Light Tour and the Church Tour are being considered for the month of December.

If you are interested in helping with any of these events, contact any board member or John Havrilla at 736-8931.
